Rulani Offers Zungu Update After his face injury

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena gave an update on Bongani Zungu after he had to be substituted in the first half of the match after suffering a nasty cut to the face during a match against the Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday night.

Zungu was jumping high to take a corner but he was worse when he collided with an Arrows player in the box, then his face was covered in blood.

Sundowns paramedics rushed over to wipe the blood off his face and lead him off the field. They then told coach Mokwena that he could not continue and Bafana international Bafana was taken out on a stretcher.

When brought on and the Sundowns played with fewer men, the Arrows took full advantage of Ryan Moon's return home in the first half, meeting Devine Lunga on loan from Sundowns to open the scoring for the local team.

Mokwena, for Zungu, replaced him with Sipho Mbule, who then scored with a late header to save the draw. "It's a deep cut just below the eye, a little swollen," Mokwena said when asked by iDiski Times about Zungu's injury.

Zungu has just returned from injury and this starting match was his first of the season, but the match lasted 25 minutes.

“But I am proud of the boy, I am proud of [Siyabonga] Mabena, I am proud of Mbule who did very, very well when he came. Proud of Lebo [Maboe], proud of Terrence [Mashego], he fought," added Mokwena. "Yeah, gotta go, gotta do better at Stellenbosch to win the game."

This was Zungu's first time playing club football in KwaZulu-Natal as well as the last time he played in the province for the Sundowns before joining Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal, having injured his knee against Maritzburg United on 30 January 2016 against Philani Zulu at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Sundowns, who have now drawn three consecutive DStv Premiership games since being confirmed as champions with seven games remaining, now turn to the Nedbank Cup, where they face Stellenbosch FC in Saturday's quarter-final. in Cape Town.
